First Presbyterian Church Pitman, New Jersey
About The First Presbyterian Church of Pitman
Worship
We hope you can join us on Sunday morning for our 8:45 AM and 11:00
AM worship services. Our pastor, Patti Weikart, preaches sermons
that relate the Bible to daily living. We celebrate the Lord's Supper the first
Sunday of every month at the 11:00 A.M. service, and 8:45 A.M. service, and
invite everyone to share in it. Our church's wonderful music includes a 15
member adult choir, hand bell choir and children's choirs. Each of our worship
services also includes a special time with children to help them feel welcome
and a part of the church. We offer nursery care for infants (with a speaker in
the nursery to hear the worship service); children may attend worship with
their parents or leave for a special craft class held during the later part of
the worship service. We have special
programs to help children understand the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. Our
deacons provide videotapes of the weekly worship services for homebound
members. Our church library has a wide range of resources for individual and
family daily devotional use. Check out
the special page of our regular Jazz Vespers
worship service on Sunday afternoons.
Learning
Our Sunday School
begins at 9:45 A.M. We have
classes for all ages: nursery class for infants and toddlers, children's
classes, junior and senior high classes and three adult groups. Adult classes
include a new Bible study on the book of Ecclesiastes and a contemporary issues class. Our
church's Weekday Nursery School offers daily programs
for 3 and 4 year old children. Every Summer we offer a
popular Vacation Bible School
program for the whole community. Our church has very active, weekly fellowship
programs for Middle School and Senior High youth. Our Confirmation Class starts
in September and finishes at the end of May. We have a fine church library with
books and videotapes on a wide range of topics. We are a growing church and we
try to offer many opportunities for personal growth, check them out online at
http://firstpresby.org/GrowingOpportunities.htm
Service
Our church does not exist only for
worship, learning and fellowship. These activities lead us out into the world
to share God's love by serving others through words and deeds. Members of our
congregation do this in many different ways. Many members and children
participate in the annual CROP walk in mid-October, which supports relief
efforts in the United States
and overseas (including Iraq).
Other members are active leaders in the Gloucester County chapter of Habitat for Humanity (we have provided Habitat with an
office at our church). Our deacons help staff a weekly ecumenical food pantry and
provide seasonal food baskets to those in need, and we support a variety of
mission programs locally, throughout the United States and around the world
to share God's love with others. More
information about our service/mission work can be found at http://www.firstpresby.org/Missions.htm Our pastors and
church members visit those in the hospital and nursing homes on a regular
basis. Our pastors are available to help people deal with a variety of problems
related to marriage, parenting, vocation, depression, alcohol, drug abuse and
more. These are some of the many ways we
try to follow Jesus' call to love our neighbors
Fellowship
We believe the Christian life is a
joyful one and we like to have fun together. On the 1st
Sunday of every month after our
11:00 A.M. worship service we have a "Fellowship Time" with
refreshments. We offer fellowship events throughout the year including church-wide
potluck lunches and dinners, trips to Phillies games,
sharing in church-wide picnics, playing volleyball, taking a group of parents
and children to a children's museum, and enjoying a dinner theater evening.
More information about fellowship activities can be found at http://www.firstpresby.org/Fellowship.htm We have several Presbyterian
Women's circles meeting at different times (usually on one Wednesday each
month) in mornings, afternoons and evenings for fellowship, learning and
service together. Our monthly church newsletter, The Cornerstone, and weekly worship bulletins include details about
our many activities that help build up our community and help us be an extended
family for every one. You are invited to everything our church is doing; please
feel welcome to attend whatever you like.
History
Our congregation was founded in
1923. The sanctuary was built two years later. Our education wing was added in
1958. We are a congregation connected to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and
ecumenical in spirit. Our church membership includes many life-long
Presbyterians, but the majority of our members come from other church
traditions-- Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Roman Catholic and
others. Members live in Pitman, Glassboro, Washington Township, and throughout
southern New Jersey. The mission of our church is to further the love of God
and neighbor in the world.
Leadership
The word "Presbyterian"
comes from the biblical Greek word for "elders." Our congregation has
a representative system of government of fifteen elected elders. Our Board of
Deacons has fifteen elected members who coordinate our caring ministries. Our
church officers and staff can be found at http://www.firstpresby.org/staff.htm
Our
church’s Nominating Committee has a web
page about elders and deacons. Our
Interim Pastor, Bob Rogers, joined our church on November 1, 2004. Please call
us (856-589-1050) if our church and pastors can be of help in any way to you or
others.
